Sustainable actions can also contribute to gaining a competitive advantage through strategic approaches.
FREMONT, CA: Sustainability remains a top priority for business decision-makers despite the current political and economic crisis. It is also true of the hospitality industry. Challenging objectives exist everywhere. According to the Global Hotel Decarbonization Report, the industry must reduce emissions by 90 percent by 2050 to meet these targets. In hoteliers' minds, there are often confusing lists of sustainability prescriptions. Hoteliers and contractors must strategize their initial plans to accommodate sustainable features earlier in the project. For a change in the traditional construction methods to be effective, contractors and clients are dissatisfied with the current state of affairs, a vision of a desirable future and defining first steps are important approaches.
Considering the dissatisfaction with current affairs and the motivational visions offered by a range of actors – including political parties, industry groups, and NGOs – for a more sustainable future, the following elements are important to take concrete, specific steps toward achieving a more sustainable industry.

Social sustainability: It is important to distinguish between sustainability actions supported by employees and those that benefit employees. Social sustainability measures revolve around three main topics: employees, guests, and society. Social changes to designing and constructing a hospitality unit include issues related to employee well-being, diversity, equity, inclusion, legal and ethical standards, and more sustainable hiring practices. There were many dominant topics in the domain of guests, including transportation, physical environment, food and beverage issues, and sustainability. CSR policies and corporate philanthropy played a dominant role in society, complemented by a focus on sustainability in the local context, including procurement and development in the local area.
Economic sustainability: A hospitality firm's sustainability initiatives fall into major areas contractors can consider before construction. They closely align with its functional organization, purchasing, marketing, strategy, management, and finance, as well as innovative and creative approaches to sustainability such as strategy and management marketing, purchasing, finance, and innovation.
Environmental sustainability: Energy, water, and waste are the three main sustainability actions focused on environmental sustainability. Specific measures are important regarding energy, including utilizing renewable energy, optimizing the built infrastructure heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), and maintaining and managing the system. The water domain focused on water conservation and pollution reduction, while the waste domain focused on waste reduction, recycling, and optimizing purchasing strategies.
